The king of flavour is back, PGI peach from Cieza

September 28, 2022After several years of work and effort, the Cieza Peach PGI has become a reality. The Romea and Baby Gold peach varieties will be marketed nationally under the indication “Cieza Peach PGI”.
In 2016, a formal request was made to the University of Cartagena for a report to analyse the Romea and Baby Gold peach varieties. In 2018, the analysis carried out concluded that both varieties belonging to the early yellow peach had better characteristics than other varieties from different geographical locations.
The event held in Thader Cieza this morning was attended by Antonio Luengo Zapata, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Pascual Lucas Díaz, Mayor of Cieza, Miriam Guardiola, Member of the Regional Assembly of Murcia, Santiago Martínez, President of the Agricultural Association FECOAM and Antonio Moya Morote, Councillor for Agriculture in Cieza, as well as the different farmers and members of the Cieza Peach PGI Association.
At the event, the new labelling of the PGI Cieza Peach was presented and the marketing of the Romera and Baby Gold peaches as Protected Geographical Indications was launched.
Antonio Luengo Zapata, Regional Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, commented:
“The varieties of Melocotón de Cieza PGI will have a seal of reliability, a seal of confidence that the consumer will have when it comes to consuming the product and that it meets the strictest requirements.”

Manuel Ruiz, President of the PGI Association and President of the Thader Cieza Cooperative, commented:
“Since the PGI was approved, new plantations have been carried out to increase production. As a next step, we are working to obtain the Brussels seal so that we can export the product and open a dossier that will allow us to add new varieties of yellow peach”.
